St George & Sutherland Region Highlights & Essential Things To Do
Discover Your Local St George & Sutherland Area
Tucked behind Sydney's Kingsford Smith is a realm not a lot of Sydneysiders venture in and out of. St George and the Sutherland Shire can seem like a foreign world to those of us on the outside, but for those born-and-bred there, this pocket is their entire world. And honestly, in terms of things to do you can hardly blame them. It's a beachside lifestyle where people divide their time between outdoor dining, days of shopping and enjoying the district's astonishing beauty and activities. For something sitting in such close proximity with so many places to go, you'll be angry when you work out how long the locals have been hogging it.
St George's Brighton Le Sands is one of the district's sparkling attractions and is one of the most recognisable beachfronts in Sydney, particularly from a Boeing 737. Dip your feet in the glittering blue with the city skyline looming in the distance while the firs and white modern high rises shade you from the summer's heat. When the sun starts to set and the strip is dimly lit, slip your shoes on and shuffle up to Grand Parade for an early dinner in the sweet night air. The Greek and Lebanese restaurants here are among the best in the city so don't feel guilty getting the baklava for dessert.
St George is your quintessential family area with families and kids littering every stretch of sand and grass. Carss Park and Kogarah Bay were almost geographically designed for barbeques and firework displays so losing a few hours at one of these spots is a prerequisite. Scope out the properties in lavish Sandringham and look at your reflection in the glassy beachfront mansions. If you're in a buying mood but these places are out of your price range, Westfield in Hurstville will more than satisfy your consumer cravings.
The Captain Cook Bridge connecting St George and Sutherland is notorious for its sunset amongst the locals. Make the transition from Sandringham over to the Shire's Taren Point and watch the dolphins dip over and above the horizon. Continue working on your tan at Cronulla Beach and don't be surprised if you're intimidated by the beach culture. The surf and sand is a way of life here so park yourself on the sand and act as the locals do. Everyone on the 'insular peninsula' heads to Miranda for shopping and, like Hurstville, Westfield has you covered. Venture deeper inside the intimate villages of Caringbah and Lilli Pilli and wish you were pulling your family four-wheel drive into the driveway.
A lifestyle that celebrates the best of what Sydney has to offer. Go ahead and enjoy what the locals know and love and see what's on in the area.
