AroundYou Social Responsibility

Helping Australians to better connect with their local communities and local business networks

Why we started – because someone had to do it

Extensive research has shown there is a steady decline in the way we engage with our local community. These studies indicate that a lack of social engagement leads to increased social isolation which in turn, can contribute to an increase in issues associated with mental health.

According to social researcher James House, PhD,

“The magnitude of risk associated with social isolation is comparable with that of cigarette smoking and other major biomedical and psychological risk factors” (Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine 2001).

At AroundYou, we recognise the problem of social isolation, so our staff and management are determined to make a difference.

We are committed to facilitating stronger community bonds by making information on local community events and activities more readily available to the general public. This is the reason we launched the community website

In 2010, we were announced as one of the inaugural winners of a nationwide competition supported by the South Australian Government and The Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) for the work we were doing to build the website.

Our Video is an abridged version of the submission presented to TACSI. The Video, with a music backdrop from Ben Lee – ‘We’re All In This Together’, highlights key comments from five inspirational community leaders who fully understand the need for greater community engagement.

Independent research says we are making a difference

In 2012, an evaluation study was undertaken by Flinders University in South Australia, to assess the effectiveness of in facilitating community engagement with our ‘what’s on’ content – the cornerstone of our website.

After six months of study, the researchers concluded was having a significant and positive social impact through increasing rates of community participation in the areas studied.
