Often called the ‘fruit bowl of the state’, the Riverland region is where the iconic Murray River feeds into wetlands and floodplain forests. With its stunning vineyards, it is the place from where most major Australian wine companies source their bulk wine.
The Riverland Region provides for almost one third of Australia’s wine grape population. The best place to see the produce in action is the renowned Banrock Station Wine and Wetlands Centre, where wine, food and the spectacular landscape come together for the perfect Riverland experience. The station includes lunches with a spectacular views of the vineyard and wetlands and the chance to tour the beautifully restored wetlands with four self-guided walking trails, each with information huts and bird viewing hides.
Showcasing the fruit of the region is Havenhand Chocolates, a must see for any sweet tooth. Local fruits from the Riverland are mixed with Belgium chocolate to create beautiful and delicious handcrafted fruit chocolates. Relax in front of magnificent views of the Murray River on the alfresco garden set deck and ‘Chocolate Café’, or watch the art of making the chocolates through the viewing windows.
One of the most popular attractions in the Riverland is the Monash Adventure Park, the perfect place to go with the kids! Here you will find crazy leaning towers, bridges and mazes, as well as free picnic and BBQ areas. The Overland Corner Hotel is another must see tourist destination. Built in 1859, it is the oldest building in the Riverland and is now both a pub and a living museum.
The P.S. Industry is an iconic river paddleboat commissioned in 1911 which still runs river cruises on the first Sunday of each month. Another way to explore the peaceful river is on a houseboat! There are a number of private charter boats for hire in various Riverland towns. River activities such as canoeing, kayaking, camping and fishing for the freshwater Callop are also popular activities in the region.
With spectacular views of the Murray River and delicious local produce to taste, there are plenty of things to do and places to go in the Riverland area for travellers of all ages.
