Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne
Heide was bought and renovated in 1934 by John and Sunday Reed. The 15 acre property consists of a French provincial style farmhouse, informal parklands and a kitchen garden. Heide quickly built up a reputation as a hub for progressive art and culture as a result of the Reeds opening their doors to like minded artists. It has since become one of Australias most prominent cultural destinations.
In 1981 Heide became a public museum which accounts the development of Australian art and cultural history, including the Reeds important contribution to modern art, music and literature in Australia today.
The Museum has a collection of artwork amassed over a 50 year period and also hosts independent and group exhibitions. Other distinctive architectural sites on the land include a weatherboard farmhouse and the two unique homes built by the Reeds.
