Discover Your Local South West Perth Area
South West Perth covers a scenic stretch of small Islands and natural coastline, from the mouth of the Swan River to the shores of Secret Harbour. Among the jewels of South West Perth is the port of Fremantle, a place of history and popular entertainment for many decades. In years gone by, Fremantle was seen as a "Shangri-La" by sailors from all parts of the globe, particularly during World War II. Now, it is a thriving seaside city that boasts fine cuisine and heritage listed landmarks.
Some of the port city's past can be discovered in a tour of the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle, a journey back through centuries of sailing, the earliest Dutch vessels and the mighty warships of the 20th Century.
A ferry ride outside of Fremantle lies Rottnest, or "Rotto", as the locals call it. This small, rocky island has been popularly visited by Western Australians since the early 1900s. While holidaying on Rottnest used to be organised by a lottery ballot system , as of 2013, tourism is now open to regular bookings. With stunning views across the waves, Rottnest is one of the top places to go for any visitor to Perth. The annual Rottnest Channel Swim encourages many athletes and amateurs to attempt the almost 20 kilometre swim to the island and is a popular local happening to watch among numerous other events.
One of the largest areas of South West Perth, Rockingham, was the traditional home of the Nyungar People, and some of the heritage sites are still popular attractions and continue to be visited today. Rockingham's scenic coastline is best appreciated among the natural rock formations and almost hidden beaches of Point Peron. While snorkelling and sunbathing are popular activities, a boat launch service can show you the area from the sea and even have you scouting for dolphins.
If you are an animal lover, check out what's on at Rockingham's Shoalwater Marine Park. In the right conditions, it is possible to cross from the shore to Penguin Island by walking over the sandbar. On the island you can visit the small population of Little Penguins. At high tide or in harsher weather, there are always boats available to and from the penguins' home. The nearby Seal Island offers a similar experience and the diversity of WA's marine life can be surprising.
Perth's South West is at its finest if you can set aside at least one full day to explore. The area can show you heritage, natural wonder and a selection of Western Australia's more secluded beaches. Fremantle and Rockingham are served by public transport from Perth's CBD, but if you can take a car, you will enjoy driving along the coastal roads at your own pace.
