In the Perth Hills to the East of the city, there are walking trails, reservoirs and parks that will cater to any nature lover. The towns and districts are home to many unique attractions and experiences, and can be a great opportunity to enjoy a quiet escape. The Gidgegannup Wildflower Drive is devoted to a striking selection of naturally growing colour. The 45 kilometre drive connects to the Walyunga National Park and shows off the depth of the Perth Hill's flora.
A little wildlife magic can be found in the Mundaring Karakamia Sanctuary, where tours depart at dusk to guide through the habitats of native and local animals, such as Quokkas and Tammar Wallabies. The Sanctuary, situated in a Jarrah forest, is one of several important reserves in WA and will introduce you to some of Australia's most endangered species in a protected and nurturing environment. The Mundaring Ecostay is a charming semi-rural sustainable living experience featuring a guest house built using hay bales and natural or recycled materials. The guesthouse is a little known way to spend a night getting closer to the lifestyle of the region.
Through neighbouring Chidlow, the Railway Reserve Heritage Trail traces the route of the long closed Eastern Railway which was built in the late 19th century. Walking over 59 kilometres of historical track work, the paths wind through railway tunnels and past heritage listed sites from the days when steam trains connect Fremantle and York. When visiting Chidlow, one of the top places to go is Lake Leschenaultia, a 168 hectare parkland with extensive facilities and popular camping grounds. The man-made lake encourages activities such as swimming and, if you have time to spare, has a cafe ready to serve hot food to guests.
Check out what's on at the Perth Observatory, where regular monthly tours have been a tradition since the 1980's. The Observatory has seen service in various capacities throughout the last century including contributing to the work of NASA in the 60's. Its historical record is open to visitors and is an excellent addition to any itinerary.
The Perth Hills are best suited to those who love the outdoors with opportunities to hike, to discover and to scout out a scenic region of the state. The simple, down to earth history that can be found in dozens of small town museums and heritage sites is unique to Western Australian.
