Newcastle Area Highlights & Essential Things To Do
Discover Your Local Newcastle Area
Australia's second oldest city is a bit of a patchwork stitching together the new, the old, the far-flung cultures and all that lies in between. But hold up a second. Before you go imagining an awkward hotchpotch that doesn't really know if it's this or that, Newcastle was named a Top Ten City in the Lonely Planet's Best of Travel Guide 2011. No surprises here. Newcastle's multiple personalities and unlimited things to do make this city irresistibly charismatic. Come and meet some of Newcastle's quirkiest characters while exploring the different events and attractions on offer.
Introducing the only Australian city surrounded by eight beaches where a dip in the waves is no different than a trip to the corner shop. Six of the eight beaches are patrolled by strong, sun-kissed life guards conjuring up the eponymous image of what it means to be a 'Bronzed Anzac'. The beaches are filled with surfers, sun worshippers and families out for a day of activities and fun. While the skies are alight with kites, the sands are sprinkled with couples enjoying a day free of life's worries.
If hunger grabs you, why not share some paper wrapped fish and chips? There's only one place to get your chips and that's Scottie's, halfway between Nobby's and Newcastle beaches. Soak your calamari and hand-cut chips in ridiculous amounts of lemon and catch the local bad boys shred the last of the day's waves.
Next, meet the historic and industrial side of Newcastle, the world's biggest exporter of coal. Climb Flagstaff Hill and check out one spectacularly busy view from the powerful landmark of Fort Scratchley. Coal and freight ships dot the water as the white wash pounds against the cliffs and the traffic noise of Darby Street fills the senses. Enter the Fort free of charge or pay a little extra to explore the museum and labyrinth of underground tunnels. The Fort also marks the beginning of the mandatory Bather's Way Coastal Walk. Follow the path back to the city centre or pursue the leisurely three hour walk to Mereweather Beach.
What about coffee, art galleries and second-hand shops? Newcastle has many places to go for those with a creative spirit, with most of the action happening on trendy Darby Street. Devour a cafe breakfast, dig through the trinkets and treasures of retro outlets or grab a coffee for the road and tackle Newcastle Art Gallery just within walking distance.
Meet all of Newcastle's personalities or become best friends with one. Here's to the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
