New England Area Highlights & Essential Things To Do
Discover Your Local New England Area
Most people driving between Sydney and Brisbane completely miss it, but if you're lucky enough to pass through New England by chance you'll sense a delicate change in the air. New England is New South Wales' very own middle-earth, so ethereal it's almost fiction living between the Hunter and Darling Downs.
With its silver lined woodlands, gentle streams and gem stones encrusting the entire region, there is no denying New England is charmed. Some say it's the Fossickers Way threading its way through New England, celebrating stones and their respective sources forming the spine of the region. They're renowned for showcasing black opals in Walgett, sapphires in Inverell as well as emeralds, jellybean crystals, aquamarine and citrine in Glen Innes. Try your luck in pocket-sized Uralla where you can get your own hands dirty and hire some gold pans at the Uralla Visitor Information Centre.
Legend has it the waters in New England can cure any ailment. Thermal spas in Moree and Walgett are major attractions bringing ancient European spa culture to rural New South Wales. Otherwise make the effort and trek it to Oxley Wilds Rivers National Park where you can enjoy the mystic waters from the very source itself. Let the Waterfall Walk lead you by the hand, guiding you through mossy figs and whispering streams to your reward at the end. Glide through the silky pool, listen for a noise and you'll feel that you have stumbled into another realm along the way.
The major cities of Tamworth and Armidale have countless activities and things to do, but do a good job keeping the magic under wraps. Tamworth is Australia's country music mecca with the Tamworth Country Music Festival a major event in the international calendar. Armidale is New England's most inhabited city, its high altitude dubbing it the perfect winter escape. The nearby town of Gunnedah is just as stunning, and will be forever immortalised in the beautiful poetry of Dorothea Mackellar. Walk across the sunburnt countryside and see the very place that inspired one of the greatest Australian poems.
Venture into another world on the door step of New South Wales. It's the kind of place you stumble across yet can't manage to leave. Chances are you're already under its spell.
