North West Melbourne Region Highlights & Essential Things To Do
Discover Your Local North West Melbourne Area
Fly into Melbourne Airport and you need venture no further than the surrounding suburbs. You've officially found yourself wrapped up in Melbourne's patchwork blanket. Be forewarned, this is not like the floral one your Nan sewed. Think mismatched colours, some stains here and there and not unlike one you've had for a very long time. Multiculturalism, suburbia, Australian sporting culture and bird-watching don't exactly complement each other. Yet, their clustering of attractions in North West Melbourne is intrinsic to this city's vibrant personality.
Speeding along the Tullamarine Freeway past the quirky sculptures, one of your first places to go will be Avondale Heights to the left. This is the North West's family friendly area that has a notoriously safe reputation. Parks are bordered by neat designer mansions and mummies never feel pressured by sundown to summon the kids.
You wouldn't think that the infamous St. Alban's, one of Melbourne's edgier suburbs, is so close by. The grungy charm is unmistakable with the crooked clusters of colourful Asian grocery stores. Make your way around the parks to the East and West of St. Alban's or pop right next door to Sunshine North where you can go bird watching in Brimbank Park. Grab a canoe and float down the saltwater creeks spotting rainbow lorikeets, brush tail possums and cockatoos. Look out over the park's grassy golden pastures and see how Sunshine North earned its name.
Go from bird-watching activities to devouring Melbourne's best Vietnamese rice paper rolls in 'Footsy' next door. The suburb of Footscray is so trendy it even has its own Instagram profile which is more than fitting for the events, sprawling street art, countless bowls of pho and Ethiopian aerated flat breads begging to be shared with friends online. Get lost in the South East Asian sprawl of Footscray Markets or put on your black and red and go and support 'the Dons' down in Essendon. Whatever thrill you seek, the North West bundles it all together for you with what's on here.
The North West region of Melbourne is a hodgepodge, alright. While its strengths are all over the board, it's a haven you won't trade for anything else.
