Discover Your Local North East Melbourne Area
North East of Melbourne away from the trendiness is a piece of the country that sways in the gentle breeze. Standing in stark contrast to the coffee-induced hipsters of the CBD, the North East is a much needed breath of fresh air from the hyper trendiness infecting the rest of the city. Come and refresh yourself as you see what's on in the North East, one of the only places in Melbourne that still hasn't crossed over to the dark side.
Preston, the North East's welcoming threshold, is a bit of a hybrid being the closest to the CBD. Formerly known for its rough reputation, Preston is in the process of gentrification and as a result has attracted a pretty eclectic mix. Young professionals, families and everyone in between occupies typical Edwardian terraces and Californian bungalows. Wander the streets, stroll past the converted apartments, find hidden events and smell the scent of the country lingering in the air.
Not too far off from here is Whittlesea and the Plenty Valley, a slice of the country within the city's confines. Embark on scenic drives, bushwalking and horse-riding activities whenever you like. The craft markets exhibit a range of handmade items and trinkets which let you take that cosy country feeling home with you. St Andrew's Community Markets will change the way you feel about getting up early on Saturday mornings. Make your way out to dewy Kangaroo Ground, feel your pores tighten in the crisp morning air and grab something for breakfast as the kookaburras warble. Don't be surprised if you're there for a while stocking up on fresh produce, handmade soaps, skincare products and handmade silks all the way from Thailand. Put aside some time to talk to a healing practitioner and guide yourself home feeling like you've returned from a Thai holiday.
Hurstbridge Village and Farmers Markets have a very similar vibe being the first place in Melbourne to go completely plastic bag free. Start the weekend off here and continue onto Kinglake, one of the top places to go for Melburnians and the perfect mini getaway after a hard week. Get intimate in one of Kinglake's tiny romantic wineries and continue the flirting a little bit tipsy in one of the many shadowy antique stores.
So it turns out Melbourne hasn't been entirely usurped by hipsters and trendy cafe culture. Head North East and refresh your tastebuds with the flavour of country Victoria.
