Macedon Ranges Area Highlights & Essential Things To Do
Discover Your Local Macedon Ranges Area
The ionic Victorian Macedon Ranges region is known for its breathtaking landscapes and quaint towns, with famously unique natural attractions such as Hanging Rock and Mount Macedon, and best of all, it’s all within an hour from Melbourne!
One of most significant features of the region is the famous Hanging Rock located near the townships of Woodend and Mount Macedon. Seen from every corner of the region, the strange rock formation has stood for over 6 million years and features local indigenous flora and fauna, as well as local cafés. The rock is also home to the Hanging Rock Cup and Race.
The impressive Mount Macedon is another significant feature of the region. At the summit of the mountain sits the 21 metre high Memorial Cross-which was established as a memorial to Australia’s fallen soldiers. The spectacular view from the cross takes in the entire southern plain, including Melbourne City and Port Phillip Bay. The road up the mountain showcases many beautiful private gardens, some such as the Forest Glade Gardens on the southern slope of the mountain which are open all year long. Forest Glade has been open for nearly a century and features an English and Japanese garden, woodland garden and a fern gully.
At the base of Mount Macedon is the quiet tourist town of Macedon. The Mount Macedon Trading Post is the hub of the town, showcasing local produce with award winning pies, homemade cakes and excellent coffee. The town of Kyneton in the Ranges region isn’t complete without a visit to the Kyneton Museum on the renowned Piper Street, with exhibitions displaying the local heritage, machinery displays and galleries. The Macedon Ranges also feature three spectacular Botanical Gardens in three towns: Malmsbury, Kyneton and Gisborne.
Only an hour outside Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges has so many things to do and places to go for travellers of all ages, so don’t forget to stop by and see for yourself.
