Limestone Coast Area Highlights & Essential Things To Do
Discover Your Local Limestone Coast Area
One of the most fascinating things about the Limestone Coast is that its beauty actually took over 26 million years to form, caused by marine life and coral sinking to the sea floor. Naturally formed lakes, rivers, craters and sand banks are what makes the Limestone Coast so magnificent today.
There are so many activities to do and places to see in the region. Start with the exploration of Coorong National Park. Walk, relax, fish, swim, kayak and camp. High sand dunes and blue water lakes make this one of the best natural attractions on the Limestone Coast.
Located in South Australia, it is no surprise that the region is also home to vineyards. The state is known for some of the best wineries in the country and Limestone Coast is no exception. The region, including the Wrattonbully region, makes some of the finest Cab Sav, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay wine varieties. Check them out for yourself.
No visit to the Limestone Coast is complete without a walk through the Southern Ocean Shipwreck Trail. The coastline is dotted with rocks, shallow waters and six lighthouses. Walk along the shoreline, head down to one of the world’s longest jetties and go for a snorkel to observe the interesting marine life.
Naracoorte Cave Fossils is a heritage listed site and it is easy to see why. Over half a million old fossil skeletons lie in these limestone caves, and there are plenty of tours to take and check them out. Twist your way through the underground and learn about the history and extinct animals of the Limestone region.
There is plenty of deep, fascinating history behind Mount Gambier’s stunning Blue Lake, but all you need to know is that it’s the site of an old volcano, holding the bluest, crystal clear water you will ever see. Come in winter and find bright royal blue water, or visit in summer for bright turquoise blue water.
Caves, volcanoes, parks and sinkholes – the Limestone Coast leaves so much to be uncovered. The region will be enthralling to all, so start planning places to go and things to do now!
