High Country Area Highlights & Essential Things To Do
Discover Your Local High Country Area
As one of the highest points in Victoria, The High Country is home to a number of beautiful mountain ranges, lakes and vineyards. Showcasing a multitude of attractions and activities throughout the seasons, a visit to the High Country is a must.
The High Country is Victoria’s true winter wonderland. Mt Buller, Mount Buffalo and Mount Hotham are the best known ski destinations in winter and they offer the best scenic walking trails in the summer. If you’re a fan of winter adventure sports, don’t pass on the chance to visit the High Country. There are Alps for skiers and snowboarders to suit all skill levels. You can even join a ski school! At less than a four hour drive from central Melbourne, Mt Buller is the favourite holiday spot for those seeking a winter break.
Not only is the high country a popular and beautiful destination in winter, but the number of scenic trails, parklands, lookouts and reserves make this region a remarkable destination all year round. Cycle or walk your way up to one of the scenic lookouts – we guarantee the exercise will be worth it! There are also many national parks and reserves throughout the High Country region such as the Alpine National Park, which is an expansive area adjoining Kosciuszko National Park. Journey your way through the bushland and seek out hidden waterfalls and lookouts. The High Country’s national parks also offer camping sites. Leave the city behind and your technology at home and get back in touch with nature!
If you’d prefer to explore the region on wheels, journey down the The Great Alpine Road. Nearly 340 kilometres long, snake your way through the mountain-side, down through vineyards and alongside beautiful lakes. Drive as far or little as you please!
Come winter or summer, The High Country lives up to its name. Breathtaking views, sparkling waterways and green fields make this area one of Victoria’s most treasured regions.
