Only 45 minutes outside Adelaide is the Fleurieu Peninsula, a hotspot of the best wine, food, wildlife and landscapes in the state. Loved by passionate locals and visitors alike, this Peninsula is not one to miss out on when you visit South Australia!
The Peninsula is home to some of the best wine regions in the world. McLaren Vale is famous for its Shiraz and boasts numerous vintage and boutique wineries, cheese and wine trails, as well as famous restaurants which showcase the fine produce of the region. Langhorne Creek also features multiple cellar doors, and is home to Wine Diva Tours that showcase the region.
The spectacular wildlife in the Fleurieu Peninsula is definitely a highlight of the region. Granite Island Penguin Centre operates a Penguin Rescue and Release programme, and is open to the public Tuesday and Sunday. The Guided Penguin Tours is your chance to view the penguins at dusk every night as they come ashore. Kangaroos are prominent in the region, seen in most of the 20 national parks the Peninsula boasts. Encounter Bay showcases the winter migrations of the Southern Right Whales.
Bird watching is also popular in the peninsula. The Coorong National Park supports this activity and is recognised as an Important Bird Area with a distinctive landscape, important for the breeding of the Australian pelican. The park is also a refuge for numerous species of migratory birds, making it ideal for bird watching. The National Park also features various walking tracks to explore, waterways to kayak through as well as driving tracks along the beach.
Water activities in the peninsula are popular with locals and tourists alike! The long beaches prove a perfect landscape for summer fun, while sheltered coves offer holiday activities such as fishing, surfing, scuba and snorkelling, sailing and swimming.
