MWIJF: Ellen Kirkwood Group
The Ellen Kirkwood Group features jazz musicians with an inspired mix of youth and experience in Ellen Kirkwood (trumpet, composer, leader) Paul Cutlan (reeds) Adam Ponting (piano), plus New Zealand bassist Tom Botting, and Alon Ilsar (drums)
Brilliant young trumpet player/composer/band leader Ellen Kirkwood is the latest recipient of the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award (JRMA). The JRMA is awarded to assist in the professional development of an outstanding young female Australian jazz musician.
Ellen has been very active in the Sydney Jazz scene both in performance and education. She attributes her participation in the SIMA Young Womens Jazz Improvisation Workshops as the springboard for her acceptance to study at the Sydney Conservatorium.
Her wealth of curiosity, imagination and musicality has led her to link her original compostions to the classic Greek tale of Theseus and the Minotaur. These will provide the core of her group’s performances.
Ellen currently plays and composes for Sirens Big Band, The Bakery and Brass Knuckles. She also directs large ensembles, teaches trumpet and other brass instruments, at many Sydney schools.
