Description
Foco Nuevo, the monthly concert organised by local musicians Sue Monk and Lachlan Hurse celebrates its fourth anniversary on Friday 2nd March at West End's Kurilpa Hall. The celebration concert will feature Sue and Lachlan's group, Jumping Fences playing their mix of original and Latin American songs, and invited guests Pirate Brides and Innes Campbell.
On returning from their fourth trip to Cuba in 2008 Sue and Lachlan established Foco Nuevo, a performance event that adapted their Cuban experiences to a Brisbane context. Little did they know that their experiment would still be going from strength to strength four years later.
"We were inspired by the vibrant music scene in Havana and the role of artists in programming local venues, which built a strong network amongst singer-songwriters, and a tremendous impetus to musical development," Sue explained.
"So we adapted this to our own situation in Brisbane, and Foco Nuevo was born. We have been holding our monthly concert ever since."
"The concerts have shown the depth of Brisbane's music scene with a wonderful array of musicians performing. Not only that, we have occasionally had visiting international artists as well who we've managed to include in our programme. It's been very rewarding, and we've been really encouraged by the great audiences that we have had, particularly in the last few months."
The night starts at 8 pm and admission is $10/$5 concession. It is a BYO event. Maggie's delicious home-made cakes and Elena's Chilean empanandas (pies) will be on sale.
