In 1902, the settlements of Brisbane and Ipswich were neck-and-neck for the title of Queensland's capital city. And, so the story goes, Brisbane won being closer to the docks compared to quaint, inland Ipswich. But this romantic little country town with the perfect gardens didn't let go of the competition without contest. Come and visit a town that has stood the test of time, having reformed very little since the twentieth century.
In retrospect, it's probably a good thing Ipswich hasn't changed for over one hundred years, because it means there are so many beautiful places to go. The grand colonial buildings still dominate the city centre, Queenslanders still lounge with their five o'clock beers on their Federation terraces, and the romantic ambience roaming the country streets is still making teenagers fall helplessly in love. Only forty minutes west of Brisbane, make the short trip and travel a long way back in time.
Background knowledge of the area is the first thing on your list so choose from one of the five heritage trails and become consumed by one of Ipswich's many stories. The city's towering spires are among the oldest churches in Queensland and are best enjoyed under a jacaranda framing your view. Explore the darker side of Ipswich's past inside the city's burial grounds, supposedly the most haunted cemetery in the state. Try your hand at one of the city's ghost tours and be sure to take your most fearless friend if you're too chicken to brave it yourself.
By now the nostalgia of the past will have you feeling a bit loved-up, and if you're looking for things to do that make you feel like you're in a Jane Austen novel, one of the most famous local attractions, the Woodlands Historic Mansion, fits the bill perfectly. The High Tea at Woodlands is an absolutely mandatory date and, once you're nibbling on cucumber sandwiches and petit-fours beneath jacarandas, it won't take much for you to see why as well. Continue the love story with any one of Ipswich's romantic activities including horse-riding, a wander around the Workshops Rail Museum and ride on the steam train, or a cosy afternoon at one of Ipswich's boutique wineries.
Emjoy Ipswich as you wander the city and be grateful that a place so charismatic can go undisturbed for so long. In hindsight, you'll be glad Ipswich missed out on capital status. If things had been different, it wouldn't be anything like the charming place that it is today.
