Top Fishing Spots South Australia
Sitting in the sun with a line bobbing precariously in the water, waiting for that big one to swim along and take the bait. Waiting… waiting… wait no longer! We’ve found some of the best fishing spots in South Australia. Increase your chances of hooking the big one and cast your line at one of these top spots.
Surrounded by water and filled with rivers and bays is none other than Kangaroo Island. There are plenty of spots around the island where you can cast your line and hook a big one. Head to Cygnet River for bream or catch all sorts of herring and squid at Kingscote. Bay of Shoals is where you’ll find your flathead, whiting and Australian salmon.
Trying to catch some tasty squid to grill on the barbie tonight? Wool Bay is your best bet. Despite the large number of people casting a line during holiday season, there are still plenty of squid to be caught. If you’re more serious about your fishing, head out on the water in a boat away from everyone else’s bait. You’ll need to bring an esky big enough to carry them all home!
This fishing spot isn’t for the faint hearted - think four-wheel driving and extreme fishing because the mouth of the Murray River is the spot to be if you’re after large mulloway. The mouth of the river is only accessible by 4WD. Where the river meets the sea is the best spot to catch large fish feeding what flows downstream. The shoreline is constantly changing with the tides so don’t spend too long in the one spot and check weather conditions before heading down.
The coastline of Yorke Peninsular, especially around Innes National Park, make for the perfect fishing spots. Whether you’re a fan of beach fishing or rock fishing, there are plenty of places along the coast to cast your line. You’ll be able to catch salmon and flathead but keep an eye out for shark along the southern tip of the peninsular.
Target big whiting at Rapid Bay or hook mullet and bream at St Kilda. No matter what fish you’re after, you can probably catch it at Fleirieu Peninsula. Many of the jetties and bays here do get busy during holiday season so get down early or take the boat out for a day on the water. Don’t have a boat? Not a problem, there are plenty of boat hire or charter options to take advantage of.
