Grab a Cold One at Melbourne's Best Microbreweries
Whether you’re a brewer in your spare time or you simply love the taste of a well-crafted beer, Melbourne is home to a number of microbreweries where you can pull up a stool and taste beer fresh from the tap. Don’t settle for bottled beer – taste the best and grab an ale, lager or stout from the following.
MOUNTAIN GOAT BEER (Richmond)
If you’ve got an acquired taste for ales then you’ll want to visit Mountain Goat Beer in Richmond. Free brewery tours are held every Wednesday and Friday from 5pm and staff will allow you to try any of Mountain Goat’s beers on tap. There’s also a pizza bar for when you’ve worked up an appetite.
LITTLE CREATURES (Geelong)
You may have seen the popular pale ale bottled but now it’s time for the real deal. The Little Creatures brewery is big on hops and malt so prepare your tastebuds for the ultimate taste test! Take a free tour through the brewery or pay just $10 and try all the beers. Remember to book head!
HOLGATE BREWHOUSE (Woodend)
Handcrafted to perfection, Holgate Brewhouse use traditional brewing methods to create a range of beers. Try a dark chocolate porter or stick with an American IPA. All beers are made with real ingredients, making them fresh and local. Tasting paddles are available for the indecisive and there’s also a hotel on site for those who simply can’t stay away.
2 BROTHERS BREWERY (Moorabbin)
Enjoy beer straight from the tank at 2 Brothers Brewery in Moorabbin. The beer hall isn’t what you’d expect at a regular brewery. With musical performances, pizzas and award-winning Victorian beers, there’s lots to love about 2 Brothers! You can even hire a keg for parties at home.
RED DUCK MICRO-BREWERY (Ballarat)
One of the smallest breweries in Australia, Red Duck certainly packs a punch! Using simple processes, the brewers here craft perfect traditional ales. Open Monday to Friday or by appointment on Saturday, head down in your spare time and try the staple beers for yourself.
Located only an hour’s drive from Melbourne is Napoleone. The brewery is open for tastings from 10am but you’ll need to make an appointment if you want to get hands on and be part of the beer or cider brewing session. Try something different to your usual and taste the White Goose – Hefeweizen. The light banana and clove drink is like nothing you’ve had before.
MORNIGNTON PENINSULA BREWERY (Mornington)
Brewing all of your favourite pale ales, stouts and imperial IPAs, it’s the speciality beers at Mornington Peninsula Brewery that will leave you wanting more. Crafted using seasonal ingredients and flavours, the small batch brews are constantly changing. Free brewery tours run at 1pm every Saturday and include tastings. Be sure to try the oatmeal ale and the English ale on your next visit.
TRUE SOUTH (Black Rock)
True South brewery and restaurant is set to become your new favourite local. With all house-brewed beers available on tap alongside traditional pub grub, there’s plenty to love about this place! Seasonal and year round beers are available but if you can’t choose between them all, opt for the beer wheel and select five beers to taste before you settle on your favourite.
BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS (Beechworth)
A bit out of the way, Bridge Road Brewers is definitely worth the trek! Using the best water, hops, malt and yeast, the beers here are constantly evolving into great flavoursome and seasonal brews. Not sure what to look for in a great beer? Staff will supply a tasting guide to help you out! Before you leave, stop off in the pizzeria and bar and have a house-brewed beer with your delicious meal.

Can’t decide on any one brewery to visit? The Local has just what you need! With a variety of local craft beers on tap and plenty more bottled, you’ll be able to sip your way through them all. From IPAs to dark lagers, you certainly will be spoilt for choice.
