Go Retro With Sydney's Best Record Stores
Trying to track down an out-of-print album you’ve been looking for? How about that rare 7” vinyl? Or maybe you just want to discover some good quality music. Whatever the case, Sydney has a number of great locations to check out if you love your music in a more physical format. These record stores are flying the flag for classic music retailers in an industry which has been all but consumed by digital distribution.
RED EYE RECORDS
Boasting the title of Sydney’s largest independent music retailer with two separate locations, Red Eye Records has been one of Sydney’s most iconic record stores since 1981. Their extensive stock includes second-hand, new, rare and out-of-print albums in a range of formats and genres.
Repressed Record specialises in local independent music and stock releases from some of Australia’s great up and coming labels. Located in Newtown, Repressed Records also hosts in-store performances from both Australian and international artists - a visit to this record store is a must for local music enthusiasts.
A haven for Sydney’s lovers of metal, punk and hardcore vinyl. Utopia relocated back into Sydney’s CBD in 2010 and with a wide range of stock including CDs, LPs, books, clothing, accessories and memorabilia, it’s a perfect one-stop shop for any true metal-head. They also host plenty of meet-and-greets with artists and sub-events, so keep an ear out!
THE RECORD STORE
In 2003, BPM Records closed down and The Record Store opened up. Since then it has been a major player in Sydney’s vinyl scene. Located in Darlinghurst, The Record Store stocks both new and second-hand records of different genres, specialising in hip-hop, rock, funk, d’n’b, soul, beats, bass, scratch records, jazz, house and indie.
With rows upon rows of obscure, rare and out-of-print vinyl and CDs, Lawson’s Records is ideal for any collector with a genuinely classic record store feel. Lawson’s is the most likely destination in Sydney to score a bargain with releases (of varying genres and formats) selling for as cheap as $5!
Whether you are an avid collector or are curious about the music of yesteryear, it is definitely worth checking out these record stores and spending an afternoon browsing their wares. Looking for an event to applaud great music and bygone eras? Sydney’s record stores celebrate Record Store Day on the third Saturday of each year.
