Cool and Crazy Crazes in Canberra
Every time someone says “stranger things have happened” believe them, because they have. In fact, they are happening right here in Canberra. Workout your weirdness and exercise your oddities with some of Canberra’s craziest hobbies.
Slip into your tunic and grab your sword, it’s time to turn back the clock to ye olde days of yore. The Ancient Arts Fellowship is Canberra’s portal back to the dark ages. Meddle in medieval sword fighting or try your hand at archery. Before you’re sent into battle, join a craft night and learn how to make your own period armour, or fashion some medieval jewels. Educational and historical displays are the main game for the re-enactment society, so you can be sure to learn all the gruesome history behind the ancient arts you practice too!
Is there really anything better than a good laugh? Feel your stress slip away with this light-hearted take on traditional yoga. Instead of being scorned by a backward bending instructor for accidentally slipping out a giggle, laughter Yoga encourages you to laugh your way through class. There’s a laughter club at Gormon House Markets, so step inside the hub of happiness!
If you fancy yourself an ABBA songster, or you’ve got a burning passion for the tunes of the supergroup, then perhaps consider joining Adante Adante, Australia’s ABBA choir! Rehearsals are held at St Columba’s Uniting Church on Monday from 7:30-9pm. If you’re a keen Dancing Queen, then give Adante Adante a Ring Ring, The Way Old Friends Do, and register your interest to be their newest Super Trouper!
If you’ve got a big passion for tiny holiday guitars, then the Ukulele Republic of Canberra is the place for you. The group is relaxed, (who wouldn’t be when they’re playing a Ukulele), and they meet on the second Friday of every month. They welcome everyone from those with chord calloused hands and a wealth of skill, to those who don’t know their B from their E chord. Pluck up some courage and join the Ukulele jam. Yes, it is acceptable to wear your all-Hawaiian pant and shirt combination.
Skepticism keeps the world in progress. If you’ve got a bone to pick or a curiosity to quench, then Canberra Skeptics can answer your questions, by asking them again from a new angle. There’s an event for every thinker with their range of specialists leading lectures that cover an expanse of topics. Alongside their formal lectures, they host Skeptics in the Pub on a monthly basis. If you can’t wait a month between meet ups, you’ll find there are skeptics in the pub after happy hour every night. Slip on your thinking caps with the Canberra Skeptics!
A man stands in the centre of the room, he is stripped of his clothing and reaching to the roof. No one blinks, this is not an unusual sight. Surrounding him is a circle artist scribbling the model’s shape onto paper. Try your hand at sketching the human body in all, and we mean ALL, its glory. The Canberra Art Workshop offers single life drawing sessions for just $15, so head down to M16 Art space this Wednesday or Saturday.
Yes, there are boats shaped like dragons flying down Lake Burley Griffin. Dragon boating is a fast and fun way to spice up your regular paddling routine. The Dragon Flyers welcome newbies, and put you through your paces on land before you meet the dragons in the water. If you want to wake the dragons like the Chinese tradition goes, then head down to Lotus Bay on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday for training.
