Why not celebrate the cold weather by spending the weekend on the slopes. Located just over two hours away from Canberra, Perisher Valley is always a favourite with the whole family. Get busy building snowmen, take a ride on one of the many lifts or try your hand at skiing. There are classes and programs to teach skiing and snowboarding to children and adults of all abilities.
Australian War Memorial
The Australian War Memorial is a great place to spend a chilly winter’s day. Spend hours learning about Australia’s involvement in some of history’s most brutal wars. With guided tours and a museum filled with priceless artefacts, it’s a great way to keep indoors. School holiday activities will keep the children busy with special exhibitions and guided tours on offer. Pay your respects to the Unknown Soldier and some of the bravest Australians to have ever lived.
Questacon isn’t just a science museum - it’s the most interactive and explorative science and technology museum in the country! With over 200 permanent exhibitions and a collection of school holiday specials, you’ll be able to spend hours learning new things about the world and the universe. Each room in the museum has a different theme and a tonne of great science games. Experience the sensation of a real earthquake, free fall from six-metres high and challenge computerised robots to a number of games and sports.
The Canberra region celebrates the best of winter for the whole of August, from the roaring fire and the hearty dinners to a nice glass of wine. The month is filled with classic winter events including annual degustation dinners, wine tastings and live performances from local artists. There will be plenty of delicious food on offer, and of course a nice cup of hot chocolate for dessert. Most events take place just half an hour’s drive from the city centre but if you are planning on staying out of town for the event, there are plenty of winter accommodation packages to choose from.
National Zoo and Aquarium
This is two attractions in one. There are hundreds of native and exotic animals to get up close and personal with. If you want to make a family day of it, make use of the picnic areas and BBQ facilities. During the school holidays there will be limited edition programs giving you more chances to get up close and personal with your favourite animals on guided tours.
