Best Stargazing Spots in South Australia
Australia is a beautiful country on land, but forget to look up and you might not realise that it’s also beautiful from above. The skies over South Australia offer some of the best astronomical phenomena. In other words – you can see some really cool twinkling lights from this state! Here’s your guide to the best stargazing spots in South Australia.
For the best chance at spotting the constellations, you’ll need to get away from light pollution. Our tip is to head to the outback and the Flinders Rangers region is perfect! High above sea level, the ranges are free of any obstruction too. Climb high and reach for the stars at this stunning location.
Arkaroola is a small village located in the Flingers Ranges region of South Australia. At 12 hours north of Adelaide, the village is quite a drive but well worth it. The wilderness is hidden from light pollution which makes the skies above much darker and much clearer for stargazing. Stay at the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and immerse yourself in the dark surroundings.
Although not very far from Adelaide, Kangaroo Island is far from light pollution. Drive just three hours south of Adelaide’s city centre and find yourself surrounded by the natural darkness of the island. With plenty of coastal vantage points, national parks and camp grounds, it’s easy to spend the night under the stars here!
Head to Eyre Peninsula for stargazing over the coast. Port Lincoln rests at the tip of the peninsula, perfect for love birds after views out to the ocean. With sea and land thrust into the darkness at the edge of the state, you’re guaranteed starry night skies. Bring along your telescope but be warned – the peninsula can get pretty windy.
Serious about stargazing? Then you’ll want to make the trip out to Lake Eyre. The lake is not only Australia’s largest salt lake, it’s also one of the darkest spots in South Australia’s outback. When filled, the lake’s water reflects the sparkling lights from above. Bring your camera along and capture the twinkling beauty of a lake like no other.
