Best Spots to Watch the Sunset in Darwin

MINDIL BEACH (The Gardens)
Heralded as one of Australia’s best beaches, visitors are often surprised to find such a beautiful tropical beach so close to the city. The Northern Territory is home to some of Australia’s most glorious sunsets, and the view from Mindil beach does not disappoint. With plastic bags banned to protect the local turtles, Mindil beaches’ beauty is untarnished by litter. From late April until the end of October, one can enjoy the sunset with a delicious selection from the Sunset Beach Market, inspired by the night markets of Asia.

STOKES HILL WHARF (Darwin City)
The historic Stokes Hill Wharf is the perfect place to watch the sunset with a glass of wine and delicious meal from one of the wharf’s alfresco dining or restaurant options, choosing from their specialties in fresh local seafood and steak. The year-round panoramic views offer spectacular sunsets over the water. Visitors have the option to watch the sunset from the wharf itself, or to partake in a harbour tour or cruise for a more intense viewing experience.

CASUARINA COASTAL RESERVE (Casuarina)
Named for the sweeping Casuarina trees that span the dramatic cliffs, Casuarina coastal reserve is the perfect place to watch the sunset. The seemingly endless view of the coastline provides the perfect backdrop for Darwin’s blazing sunsets. A variety of native wildlife can be seen on the shores, and depending on the time of year, visitors may see migratory birds or nesting turtles. The coastal reserve has ample room for activities, giving guests the opportunity to bushwalk, fish, picnic or cycle and fully enjoy the areas natural beauty.

DUDLEY POINT (East Point)
By far the largest park area around the city, East Point Reserve offers a wide array of magnificent views of the ocean and sunset. Within the reserve, Dudley Point can be found. Famous for its military history, Dudley Point offers visitors an opportunity to watch the sunset from atop WWII buildings and outlooks. As the evening approaches, the resident populace of wallabies is said to come to graze in the surrounding bushland too.

DARWIN SKI CLUB (Fannie Bay)
Situated on one of the most beautiful sections of Darwin Harbour, the Darwin Ski Club is one of the best places to relax and watch the sunset. The casual atmosphere makes the club a great place to grab a drink and some reasonably priced pub food while taking in the gorgeous array of colours from the setting sun. If you come to enjoy the view from Friday to Sunday, you’ll have the chance to be serenaded by a live band.
